Surprisingly Powerful – The Mojo Thunderbolt Heavy surfcasting rod Review
I was expecting a broom stick (stiff top section making it hard to detect bites) when friend told me people were casting 8oz sinkers and baits with this rod.....it is in fact the exact opposite.
It is a grunty rod which has been beefed up through the midsections, this has resulted in a very strong 14ft surfcasting rod. I casted a ledger rig with 2 baits and a 6oz sinker and it felt light, it could cast an 8oz with baits no problem as other the have claimed. The tip section is strong but thin, allowing the fisher person to detect bites easily. Most brands use solid tips to avoid breakage, but what surprised me is that the Thunderbolt features a hollow tip— for added casting power. It’s thin and responsive, yet helps launch heavy payloads with authority.
Rod is very light, strong guides/ reel seat are of good quality.
I also really like the wraps and how they go down to the bottom on the butt section, so important as you can load up the rod with power by placing hand further down.
An excellent all rounder, any surf beach, estuary mouths with high current, even on the rocks. Thinking of casting large kahawai live baits with a surf caster? Not many rods could do it, this one could.
I feel very confident I could land a 20+ kg land based kingi with this rod......I couldn't say that about many other 12ft+ rods.
All in all I'm impressed. Proud to have the Mojo Thunderbolt as my first choice land based rod now! Thank you Mojo 🎣
