A MUGEN MetalStorm helped land a 26kg kingfish and took out King of the Season.
Tested and proven over two years in New Zealand conditions, the MUGEN MetalStorm surfcasting reel has been further refined for 2026.
Built with enhanced strength, casting capability, and long-term durability, the MetalStorm is ready for serious saltwater surfcasting — from everyday snapper and big kahawai to powerful kingfish and heavier species.
Purpose-built for New Zealand surfcasting, the MUGEN MetalStorm 14000 has earned recognition for its performance, build quality, and reliability. From Thames and Muriwai to 90 Mile Beach, it has become a trusted reel for anglers who demand strength, distance, and confidence from the shore.
The Worm Shaft Oscillation System enables more precise vertical spool movement, allowing the line to be laid more evenly and tightly across the spool.
A cleaner and more compact line lay helps reduce unnecessary up-and-down line travel during casting, lowering friction between the line layers and the spool lip as the line leaves the reel. With less friction, more casting energy can be transferred into line release and rig flight instead of being lost through resistance.
This helps improve line release smoothness, reduce energy loss, and support longer, more stable casts. For surfcasting applications where distance matters, this is a critical foundation of casting performance.
The MCF-Metal Core Frame is MUGEN’s reinforced reel body design.
It combines a lightweight aluminium alloy frame with key stainless steel components to improve body rigidity and strength under load. This construction helps maintain durability and corrosion resistance in demanding saltwater environments.
The MetalStorm is built with an internal Sliding Rod Support System, designed to work in coordination with the main shaft and drive gear assembly.
This system strengthens both the transmission support and load-bearing support inside the reel body. Under heavy drag pressure and powerful fish runs, the internal load is not carried by the main shaft alone. The sliding support rod helps share and stabilise force across the main shaft and gear structure, reducing internal flex, shaft movement, and gear misalignment under strain.
This added internal support helps the gears stay more securely engaged under load, while supporting smoother oscillation and more stable winding performance during heavy use.
The Sliding Rod Support System is one of the key structural features that makes the MetalStorm suitable for heavy-duty fishing. For a surfcasting reel built around strength and high drag capability, internal support matters. It gives the MetalStorm a stronger internal backbone, helping the reel stay solid, stable, and dependable when serious pressure comes on.
The MetalStorm features a 4cm long-cast shaft spool design. By extending the spool length and reducing spool depth, it helps reduce friction between the line and the front lip of the spool during casting, supporting smoother line release and longer-distance casts.
While achieving an extended spool profile, the MetalStorm also takes into account the strength and load balance required around the main shaft. Spool length, shaft support, body rigidity, and internal structural strength must work together — true long-cast performance is not achieved by spool length alone.
The spool is made from aluminium alloy for added strength, matching the overall power and performance focus of the MetalStorm.
Paired with the dense and even line lay of the Worm Shaft Oscillation System, the long-cast shaft spool helps the line release more smoothly, improving casting distance while supporting better stability and control.
Together, these structural details work with the MetalStorm’s max drag capability and reinforced body to deliver a more powerful, balanced, and dependable reel.
With up to 20kg of drag power, the MUGEN MetalStorm is built to handle serious saltwater pressure.
The drag system is designed to work with the reel’s reinforced body, internal support structure, and heavy-duty drive system. This means the drag power is not just a number — it is supported by the overall strength of the reel.
When fighting bigger, harder-pulling fish such as kingfish, sharks, and stingrays, the reel needs more than strong drag washers. It needs a solid internal structure to support high-load pressure, maintain stability, and give anglers greater confidence during the fight.
Each MetalStorm 14000 also includes an additional set of 3 carbon drag washers, allowing anglers to tune the drag feel based on target species, line choice, and fishing technique.
The ceramic line roller bearing is designed to reduce friction and heat build-up during line retrieval.
This helps improve smoothness, protect line performance, and support long-term reel durability under demanding saltwater conditions.
The MUGEN MetalStorm 14000 holds approximately 750 metres of 0.35mm / 60lb PE braid, based on PowerPro braid capacity.
This makes it suitable for heavy surfcasting setups and drone fishing applications where line capacity, load support, and range are critical.
The MUGEN MetalStorm will offer both 14000 and 10000 size spool options.
Whether you prefer mono or braided PE line, the extra spool option gives anglers more flexibility to match their reel setup to different fishing styles, locations, and target species.
