First impressions
I was asked to give this rod a go and see what I thought of it. So here goes.
Craftsmanship is pretty high — the rod looks and feels great. The attention to detail is impressive, and it even has silver rings on the joins to stop splitting, plus a slightly rougher area to aid in the assembly and disassembly of the rod. It’s very light and balanced pretty well. I was taken aback by the look of it — a nice-looking rod for sure. Joins are nice and tight, as expected in a new rod.
Casting
Using a pulley rig with a 5oz breakaway and a cubed bait, the rod flicked really well. It was stiff, but not too stiff, in the base and mid-section, with a nice firm but sensitive tip that recovered reasonably quickly after the cast, which always helps.
As I casted more and more today, I started putting more into the cast, and as I did, I thought to myself: it’s handling this very well indeed. Before long, I had a decent amount of confidence in the blank and was getting some great distance — very close and similar to what I get with my Abu Garcia 14.6’ rod.
Unfortunately, today I didn’t get to load the rod up on a decent fish — only a small 32cm snap came along. But I’m keen to see what it’s like with a decent fish on, as I think it will have no problems getting the job done for sure.
Overall thoughts
Pretty good, to be fair — and given the price, it’s bloody great for what you get. Retail is only $280. I can’t think of another rod at this price that feels and casts like this that I’ve tried. I will be using this rod for a bit to see how it holds up, but first day out and I must say I’m quite surprised.
